Disqualification
General Disqualifications
Grounds for Disqualification
- Advanced braiding techniques
- Use of non-approved tools, products, hair, or materials
- Unsafe or harmful practices during competition
- Failure to complete required scope of work within time
- False representation or concealment of work
- Severe unprofessional or disruptive conduct
- Failure to follow official instructions from HEBS staff or judges
Braid & Loc Specific Violations
- Dirty tools or disorganized workstation at competition start
- Disorganized work area reflecting lack of professionalism
- Lack of model comfort — visible discomfort or improper handling
- Excessive tension or pulling — pain or damage to hair
- Unprofessional conduct — poor attitude, lack of focus, disrespect
- Each braid & loc violation results in a −3 point deduction from the technical score rather than automatic disqualification, unless the violation is severe.
- HEBS reserves the right to enforce deductions, penalties, or disqualification when rules are violated. Category-specific disqualification language may appear inside individual category rules, but this section serves as the master enforcement standard across all HEBS competitions.
Equipment standards
Power Tool Requirements

Wattage Limit
Blow dryers should not exceed 1,800 watts. Exceeding this limit may cause power issues at the competition venue and can result in penalties.

Surge-Protected Power Strip
Competitors must bring a surge-protected power strip to their station. This is mandatory — not optional. Standard power strips without surge protection are not permitted.

One High-Wattage Tool at a Time
Only one high-wattage tool should be actively used per station at a time. Running multiple high-wattage tools simultaneously may trip circuit breakers and disrupt competition.

Safe Working Condition
All tools must be visibly clean prior to competition start. Proper disinfectant use required. Unsafe or unsanitary workstations may result in point deductions or disqualification.

No Damaged Cords or Wires
Exposed wires, damaged cords, or unsafe tools are strictly prohibited. Any tool found to have damaged wiring will be removed from the competition floor immediately.
Checklist Summary
- Blow dryer max 1,800W
- Surge-protected strip required
