Everything you need to know about how the Scissor Precision championship is structured and what is required on competition day.

 

Time & Format

40-Minute Scissor-Only Competition

Competitors have 40 minutes to execute a complete style using primarily scissors. All cutting must demonstrate clean sectioning, smooth blending, and technical discipline — without any clipper assistance at any stage.

Strict Tool Restrictions

What Is NOT Permitted

No clipper use at any stage. Razors cannot be used for shaping or bulk removal. Trimmers cannot be used for fading or blending. These restrictions are strictly enforced — violation results in disqualification. Scissors are the primary and defining instrument of this division.

Scissor Standards

Scissors (all types and sizes) are the primary tool. Trimmers may be used for final hairline detailing only — not for blending or bulk removal. Combs and clips are permitted for sectioning. No clipper use at any stage.

Judged using the Barber Technical Criteria85 performance points + 15 compliance points = 100 total. Special focus on smooth blending without clipper use — the defining technical challenge of this division.

Precision & Consistency of Scissor Work

The quality and control of every scissor cut — clean sections, sharp execution, and consistent technique from start to finish. Judges evaluate whether the work could only have been achieved through mastery of the scissors.

Organization and structure of the cutting — logical parting, consistent sections, and technical execution that reflects training and mastery. The work must demonstrate a clear system.

Smooth Blending Without Clipper Use

The defining challenge of this division — seamless transitions between lengths achieved entirely with scissors. No visible lines, no harsh breaks. Smooth gradient and flow produced by hand.

Balanced Structure & Weight Distribution

Overall structure of the haircut — symmetry, proportion, and how well the weight distribution complements the model’s head shape. Balance must be consistent from all angles.

Clean, Controlled Hairline Detailing

Sharp, precise detailing around the hairline and perimeter using trimmers (detailing only) or scissors. Clean edges that complete the look without relying on clippers.

Know Before You Compete

Key Competition Rules

All competitors are responsible for understanding and following the rules of their category. Violations may result in point deductions or disqualification.

No Clipper Use — Zero Tolerance

No clippers are permitted at any stage of this competition. Any use of clippers — for cutting, blending, or finishing — results in immediate disqualification.

Razor & Trimmer Restrictions

Razors cannot be used for shaping or bulk removal. Trimmers are permitted for final hairline detailing only — not for fading or blending. Violation may result in disqualification.

No Pre-Cutting Permitted

No pre-cutting, pre-styling, or pre-shaping before the competition begins. All work must be performed live within the 40-minute window.

Stop When Time is Called

Competitors must immediately stop all work the moment time is called. Continuing after the time limit results in deductions or disqualification.

Clean Tools Before Competition

All tools must be visibly clean prior to competition. Proper disinfectant use during and after service is a scored compliance requirement.

Nicks or Cuts Result in Deduction

Any visible nick or cut caused during service results in an automatic –3 point deduction per violation.
